From June 25 to July 5, 2024, 84 6th year students from the European School of Alicante will dedicate themselves to community service, participating in a soup kitchen (Alicante Gastronómica Solidaria), caring for animals in rescue centers (Huellas de la Montaña and Asoka El Grande), collecting clothes for the needy (Inpavi) and teaching English to the most disadvantaged (Inpavi).

A Positive Impact on the Community

«How can we ignite the spark of active citizenship in young people? What motivates them to create a positive impact in their community? These were some of the questions that laid the foundation for the Citizenship Actions Program (CAAP) initiative Actions For All Program), launched two years ago by the Spanish Presidency of the European Schools. Last year, the Irish Presidency decided to continue the initiative. «In Alicante, we have fully embraced this project, recognizing the incredible potential to develop civic skills. of our students and thus promote solidarity within our local community», comments Giancarlo Marcheggiano, Director of the European School of Alicante.

Use Talent to Make a Difference

Philip Jones, CAAP Coordinator, shares their enthusiasm: «In last year’s inaugural edition, 76 students participated as volunteers in the local community. This year we are surpassing that number. 84 students are heading to soup kitchens, rescue centers animals, organize fundraisers and teach English. It’s great to see them step out of their comfort zone and use their talents to support charities and local organisations.

The students are equally enthusiastic. Dimitri Domzalski, a participant in last year’s program, reflects: «It was an enriching, eye-opening experience. Knowing that our work was truly helping others made me aware of the reality around us.»

Future Plans

«Will this project continue? Of course, although finding partners to collaborate with is always a challenge,» says Philip Jones. «We appreciate any participation from organizations and charities that want to join us in our third edition next year.»
