The recent changes made to the General Regulations of the European Schools make it difficult for AMPA to collaborate in the management of the canteen service.

As a consequence of these changes and the lack of volunteer families participating in the work of the Management Committee, it has been decided in the Joint canteen Committee that from the 2023/2024 school year, the School will subcontract the canteen service via a concession contract.

The School launched the tender process in June and according to the results, Ausolan will continue to be the company providing the school canteen service at the European School of Alicante.

All the information about the service organisation is available at the school’s website and on  www.comocomen.com

The regulations of the Joint Canteen Committee are being revised to define the collaboration of AMPA as of the 2023/2024 school year.

This fee will allow students to enjoy a piece of fruit which is distributed during break time, as well as the use of cutlery, furniture, napkins, water in the dining room and the corresponding maintenance and cleaning.

Access to the canteen for secondary school pupils

  1. The canteen manager will deliver a card to those pupils whose parents/legal representatives have paid for the service. Secondary students (1st-7th year) always have to present their card to gain access to the school canteen (it is necessary to check the regular payment of the fees). These cards are individual and non-transferable (only those who have paid have the right to receive the service of the monthly menu).
  2. Each pupil will pass his/her card through the reader, which will register each pupil’s access to the canteen facilities. (This helps checking and tracking the use of the service).
  3. First card is always free of charge. The cards must be returned on the last day of the school year. If the card is not returned, or in case it gets lost, to get a new card, a payment of €20 must be made to the canteen company. (Cards and their production have a cost; returning them will limit waste).

After having studied the possibility of using microwaves in the school canteen, the Joint Canteen Committee informs that it is not possible to use them for the following reasons:

  • Safety: to avoid burns – the temperature of food heated in microwaves can never be 100% controlled; possibility of cross-contamination in the case of pupils with food allergies; possible breakage of crockery brought from home.
  • Health: There are some basic food safety rules, using a microwave can be a practice that can lead to food poisoning, as food has to be heated evenly and reach a temperature of 70 degrees, if cold spots are not eliminated bacteria could survive. In the infant stage, even small amounts are enough to trigger serious disorders. When a microwave is used, the food is being handled, therefore the responsibility would lie with the Ausolan Canteen Company and the School. Neither Ausolan nor the school can assume responsibility for the food brought from home and in what condition the food has been in until it is heated in the microwave.
