This school year, the dining hall of the European School of Alicante has once again become a small laboratory of discovery, learning, and taste. Thanks to the collaboration between the AMPA, the School, and AUSOLAN, Early Years and Primary pupils take part every Wednesday in a workshop designed especially for them: “Discovering Flavours: A Nutritious Breakfast.”
These workshops have a clear educational purpose: to help children better understand the foods that form part of their daily lives. Throughout the sessions, they identify the raw ingredients used in cooking, explore the different types of flavours (sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and umami), and learn to recognise them on their own taste buds. They also connect each food with its characteristic flavour and discover its nutritional properties.
In addition, pupils prepare a healthy breakfast, which they can make autonomously and enjoy together with their classmates. This hands-on activity fosters creativity, curiosity, and, above all, teamwork.
While preparing the breakfast, the groups also discuss the origin of food: whether it comes from plants or animals, how it is produced, and which geographical regions it comes from. This helps them connect what they eat with nature, culture, and the world around them, broadening their understanding beyond the plate.
At the AMPA, we celebrate AUSOLAN’s commitment to transforming school meals into a meaningful and educational experience for our youngest students. These workshops are a direct investment in their well-being, health, and learning.
