What is meant by a child with high abilities?

In the context of the European Schools, a pupil with high abilities is not defined solely by a high intelligence quotient, but rather by a set of cognitive abilities that are above average. These may include strong reasoning skills, speed and depth of learning, abstract thinking, creativity, or a high level of intellectual curiosity. Giftedness is a neuropsychological condition, and its identification must be carried out through an appropriate professional assessment.

A holistic view of the pupil

The identification of high abilities is always based on a comprehensive assessment of the pupil. According to the policy of the European School of Alicante, four main areas are considered: cognitive abilities; creativity and divergent thinking; self-concept and personality; and adaptive resources in the personal, family and social domains. This holistic approach allows for a better understanding of the child’s real educational needs and helps to avoid simplistic labels.

Identifying in order to support

The aim of the identification process is not to label pupils, but to recognise their potential in order to provide an appropriate educational response. Identification may originate either from the school or from the family, and it requires close collaboration between both, together with the educational support team.

Procedure

When indicators of high abilities are observed, the case is analysed by the Educational Support Team in collaboration with teachers and the family. In order to formally continue the process, families are asked to provide an external, multidisciplinary psycho-educational assessment, which constitutes an essential element for confirming the pupil’s profile. Based on this information, the school may begin to define a personalised support plan, which can include classroom differentiation measures, enrichment programmes or, in exceptional cases, acceleration measures.

Flexible support focused on well-being

The educational measures adopted are reviewed regularly in light of the pupil’s development, emotional well-being and motivation. The ultimate goal is for each child to fully develop their potential in a balanced, respectful and stimulating environment, while also supporting families with clear information and a calm, thoughtful approach.
