During the last week of February, all primary students at the European School of Alicante participated in talks and workshops jointly organized by the school and the Alicante City Council. These free activities, aimed at interested municipal schools, were structured into two parts for the primary cycle.
Students from P1 to P3 attended one-hour sessions titled «The Benefits of Having a Garden.» The main objective of these talks was to raise children’s awareness about the importance of land cultivation in feeding the planet’s 8 billion inhabitants. Current issues related to this human activity were addressed, such as pollution, desertification, and the influence of climate change.
Additionally, topics directly related to garden management were discussed, including the identification of beneficial and harmful insects, companion plants that mutually aid each other’s growth, and the composting process, teaching students how to create their own compost to enrich the soil. The session concluded with interactive games using educational cards, reinforcing the knowledge acquired in a playful manner.
Students from P4 and P5 also participated in a one-hour talk titled «Energy at Play,» which covered concepts such as climate change, energy and electricity consumption, and the importance of reducing our ecological footprint on the planet. Following the talk, games were conducted to actively explore energy savings at home and alternative energies as renewable energy.
These initiatives by the Alicante City Council aim to promote environmental education from an early age, fostering a deeper connection with nature and greater awareness of sustainability among students.
