Have you ever wondered who designs the canteen menus, whether your child can have seconds if they’re still hungry, or how to contact someone if you have a question? The AMPA got straight to the source and interviewed the AUSOLAN team, who run the canteen at the European School of Alicante. Here are the answers.

How is the food prepared? The entire process takes place on school premises: from sourcing raw ingredients to cooking and serving. No central kitchens, no reheated meals.

Who designs the menus? AUSOLAN’s in-house team of nutritionists creates the monthly menu, as well as personalised diets for students with specific needs due to allergies, intolerances or other dietary restrictions — always based on a medical prescription.

Are there options for different needs? Yes. In addition to medically prescribed adapted menus, there is an ovo-lacto-vegetarian menu with a fish option on the days it is offered to all students.

Is the Infant School menu different from Primary or Secondary? Essentially the same, although some dishes are adapted for the youngest children when the texture might be harder for them to eat.

Are the portions the same for everyone? No. Portions are adapted by age group, following the School Canteen Guide of the Generalitat Valenciana (2018).

Can children have seconds if they’re still hungry? Although the canteen’s technical specifications don’t officially include seconds, in practice they are offered to children who need them.
