On Wednesday, 25 June, the second Environmental Council of the school was held.
During the meeting, the school canteen’s chef, Vicente Alenda Torres, shared a striking fact: canteen users consume an astonishing 6,000 recycled paper napkins every week. Although these are made from recycled materials, reducing their use also helps to lower both water consumption and the carbon footprint associated with their production.

Producing a single recycled napkin requires approximately 1litre of water throughout its lifecycle, from paper collection to manufacturing and transport. Additionally, each napkin emits around 7g of CO₂ equivalent during its production process.

The estimated environmental impact of weekly napkin use in the school canteen is:

  • Water consumption: ~6 m³
  • CO₂ emissions: ~42 kg CO₂eq

We therefore believe it would be very beneficial to launch a small awareness campaign among students and staff to encourage responsible napkin use. A simple moment of reflection before grabbing multiple napkins can make a big difference over the course of the year.

We also take this opportunity to remind families that, according to the guidelines of the Alicante City Council, used paper napkins (as well as kitchen paper) can and should be disposed of in the brown organic waste bin. This practice contributes to the composting cycle and to more sustainable waste management overall.

Together, we make a difference.
